The Estuary and its Wildlife
The St Lucia Estuary is massive and is the largest in Southern Africa. Covering an area of 350 square kilometers, North to South 85 Kilometers and West to East 22 kilometers. The estuary is home to an impressive 800 or so Hippotomus, 1200 Nile Crocodiles, and an impressive 526 Bird Species year-round.
All wildlife roam freely and this may be witnessed when seeing a Hippo walking through the town of St Lucia during daytime or nighttime.
Shoreline Boats offer 2x15 seater vessels that were purpose-built with shallow drafts. This ultimately ensures that you can get up close to the wildlife while out on the estuary. All trips have a duration of 2 hours and depart daily from the Siyabonga Jetty.
St Lucia Estuary Boat Trips - Best Times
Without a doubt, the sunset trips are the most popular and quite fantastic, to tell the truth. Late afternoons are quite amazing as this is also the time when the Hippos are more active and readying themselves to go in search of grass on land. So seeing them Yawning is definitely not a sign of them being tired.
That added with the African Sunset you are truly in for a treat. However, the early morning trips are a lot quieter and in all honesty magnificent. The Hippos returning to the water, a slight mist over the water and absolute silence.
The midday trips are by no means any less adventurous, this has the opportunity of witnessing the Nile Crocs basking on the banks of the Estuary as well as being able to see some other wildlife coming down to the water's edge for water.
Shoreline Boats Guarantees sightings of Hippos on all outings.
